A locker can make a middle and high schoolers life a lot easier, freeing them up from the burden of having to carry around multiple books for all of their subjects. But, with their new found use of lockers, the topic of locker safety must be also addressed in order to maximize safety in all aspects of their educational experience. As technology continues to play a prominent role in students’ lives both in and out of the classroom, it’s likely that the majority of your school’s lockers will house at least one electronic device. In additional to that, personal items such as student’s coats or sneakers and textbooks are also typically stored in their lockers. Since all of these belongings can come at a high cost, it’s important to advise students on how they should care for their property, since locker theft is always possible.

Take some time to go over how your students can make sure their items are kept safe and secure with these locker-safety tips:

Encourage them to:

• Never give out their locker combination. Even if they trust someone 100% or want to share your locker with their best friend it’s important to keep their locker combination private and only known to them.
• Always check that their locker is shut and locked before walking away. Even if they think it’s completely closed, they should always double check it, as there is always a possibility that the lock didn’t catch.
• Purchase a backpack that can fit both their books and electronic devices comfortably. Although the purpose of a locker is to store items that you don’t need on you at all times, the best way to keep your property safe is by keeping it with you.
