Promoting Hand Washing in The Classroom

October 7, 2018

Handwashing is a critical process in Elementary schools to reduce the chance of diseases, like the common cold, from spreading. Colds and other illnesses can lead to absences and loss of learning time for students and teachers alike and have a serious impact on a child’s future. Of course, it is much easier to say that hand washing is important than to implement it effectively. Here are some steps that can be taken to get children to start washing their hands more regularly.

Education

Children are in elementary school to be educated and a teacher should build hand washing into lessons in order to get them washing their hands more regularly. While elementary school children are too young to truly understand what germs are, they can start to develop an understanding of the importance of getting rid of germs with regular hand washing. Make this into a teachable moment to reduce germs with hand washing.

Build a Routine

Teachers should build out a routine in which students wash their hands after certain activities such as:

  • Using the bathroom
  • Playing on a rug or floor
  • Completing games and activities
  • When they arrive in the morning
  • Before leaving for the day

Having the Proper Equipment

While washing your hands is important for students, you don’t want them to leave the classroom to wash their hands in the bathroom all day. The best way to build out a routine in terms of washing your hands is to have stations set up in the classroom where students can wash their hands and quickly return to their classwork.
