Most schools employ some sort of summer reading program, but it’s not always so easy to get students to comply. And really, who can blame them? After ten months in the classroom, we understand why they’d rather run wild in the sun than sit down and read a book. That’s why as educators, it’s important that summer reading is made fun! Before you assign your boring old summer reading books, why not give these tactics a try instead?
Scavenger Hunt – Give your students a list of all different types of book genres and reading tasks that you’d like them to complete this summer. Each task will have a different point value. For example, if your students read two books by the same author, they may be 10 points, but reading a full series by the same author might get them 50. Be creative and award prizes to those with the highest score at the end of the summer!
Book Bingo – This is similar to the scavenger hunt, but less intense and more direct. Instead of listing open ended tasks, list specific, grade-appropriate book titles on a large bingo board. Encourage your students to read through each book and illustrate each box with a key takeaway from the book after they read it. Each student that brings back a completed bingo card in the fall will win a prize!
Reading Blog – If your students are a bit older, it may make more sense to loop some technology into their summer reading activities. Before the school year ends, help each student create and design their own blog and come up with a reading list. Encourage each student to choose books that interest them, and ask that they do a quick blog review of each one once they have finished reading it. This is a great way to get students interacting with one another before the school year begins!
