3 Ways to Celebrate National Poetry Month in the Classroom

April 6, 2016

It’s that time of the year once again — the time to set aside some lesson plans to focus on poetry for National Poetry Month! If you’re looking for ways to celebrate poets and their craft in your classroom, we’ve got you covered.

  1. Read: There are so many iconic poetry books out there for you and your students to enjoy. Grab ahold of several different types of poems, and spend a few days on each. Read a few poems of each style and discuss their unique layout and writing rules. Most students are surprised to learn that not all poems have to rhyme!
  2. Write: Once you’ve spent time going over how to write each type of poem, give your students a chance to try. Assign one or two “Poets of the Day” throughout the month and invite them to write and read their poems aloud. At the end of the month, have each student type and illustrate their poem and bind them up into a class poetry book — Perfect for open school night!
  3. Explore: It’s not just the poems that are important, but the authors that wrote them as well. Take some time to research some renowned poets as a class, or assign each student an author. Have them come up with a timeline of the author’s life and share their findings with the class.
