Could Yoga Be The Next Big Thing in Education?

February 18, 2016

Recent studies have shown that students who participate in yoga in the classroom have shown a significant improvement in focus, academic performance, overall creativity and self-esteem. Taking all of these factors and the stress-free mantra that yoga promotes into account, we’re not all that surprised!

For many years, practicing yoga has been recommended to help ease anxiety, clear the mind and maximize mental stimulation. With that in mind, it only makes sense that such a practice would be beneficial to those that are facing what are arguably some of the most difficult years of their lives, both intellectually and inter-personally — students.

The idea to being incorporating yoga in the classroom came as a direct result to the devastation and emotional distress surrounding the 9/11 terrorist attacks in Manhattan. In order to help students in the surrounding areas manage post-traumatic stress symptoms, Bent on Learning was born. This non-profit organization began by teaching yoga to students in just 10 schools in the Manhattan area, and has since expanded nationwide, cultivating a waitlist of more than 40 schools and counting.

The results of this new addition to the curriculum have been impressive, helping students to not only focus and stay on task, but to stay out of trouble and avoid suspensions as well.
