When your kids are home for winter break, education ends up being the last thing on their minds. They just got done taking finals and the work from the semester is over. They’re probably looking forward to spending the next few weeks relaxing. Sleeping in until noon, playing video games, hanging out with their friends, etc. But there are activities for them to participate in that are fun and educational.
Switch up Gameplay. For a lot of kids, especially boys, they’ll probably want to spend their free time playing video games. Instead of the fighter and shooter games they normally play, we could try to introduce them to something a bit more educational. There are lots of computer games that incorporate learning into the gameplay. Games that might involve solving math puzzles or creating chemical formulas to escape being a captive. The plot or storyline of the game engages them, so they don’t realize the basic math or science they’re learning as they play.
Think Puzzles. Try puzzle activities to keep them engaged outside of school. Print off a sudoku puzzle or word search for them to complete. A booklet of crossword puzzles or word searches would make a great Christmas present. An activity that will keep them entertained and also requires a bit of thinking. Sudoku puzzles, word searches, crosswords, and mazes are among several great strategy activities. This way they’ll be keeping their minds sharp and engaged while staying entertained until they go back to school, instead of them sitting around the house all day watching tv.
