As parents and children watch the summer end and feel the crisp autumn air move in, they prepare for heading back to school. Going to back to the classroom does not have to cause the blues. Here are a few tips on how to make the transition more enjoyable.
Keep Kids Motivated. One way to keep kids interested and engage with returning to school is to get them involved with back-to-school shopping. Picking out new clothes, supplies, and backpacks can be fun, and gently remind them that going to school will give them a chance to use their new things.
Changing Lesson Plans. A new year means new subjects. If you can, get the class schedule before school starts. Begin looking for programs, games, or projects you can do at home to foster the child’s interest and education in the upcoming classes.
Have a Play Day. If you know some of the other kids or parents, see if you can set some time where the children can get together. Invite the parents too. It doesn’t have to be anything stressful, just have some people over for drinks and snacks. Have a few yard games set out if the weather is nice, or if they play day is indoors, have a simple craft table put together.
Beating the back-to-school blues should be handled day-by-day as the main event nears. Some days will be better than others. Preparing a little ahead of time, spending time talking, and being with your children will ultimately get them comfortably back into their routine.
