Tired of honking horns, swerving drivers, and red lights on your way to work? Leave your car keys in the drawer and try walking to work! While it may seem intimidating at first, walking to work is a stress-free way to get where you need to be. Plus, it also:
In the United States alone, there are roughly 143 million people ages 16 and over who commute to work every day. That means that at any given point, 45% of the American population is driving to or from work. In Canada, vehicles are responsible for 30% of the total greenhouse emissions, and a similar number is present in the United States. If all commuters walked to work even just once a week, in Canada alone, that would save 3.8 billions tonnes of greenhouse gases from going into the environment. That’s the equivalent of taking about 800,000 cars off the road. Obviously, not all commuters can walk to work each. That’s why if you live close enough to work to walk, you should do it every day, and help to off put the commutes of others.
One of the biggest health benefits you will receive from walking to work is the anti-anxiety factor. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, just five minutes of aerobic exercise can help relieve anxiety. Walking also gives you a chance to get away from any screens. Just looking around at the outside world while you walk is a nice change of pace from the typical hectic morning commute.
Even if you’re a bit intimidated by walking to work, give it a try just once! You’ve got nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain!
