New Year, New Classroom Seating Chart

December 31, 2017

With the holiday season coming to a close, you might find that your students are having trouble being motivated, so why not change up their seats! A new seating plan can really change the flow of the room, and keep them in the zone. So with the start of 2018, here are some classroom seating suggestions that can help you start off the new year right.

Standard Rows

While rows might not be the most fun alternative, they’re great for classes and course areas to lead themselves to individualized work. If you don’t foresee much group work and anticipate a lot of testing, rows are a great option. However, remember that this seating style takes up a lot of room, so it may not be suitable for a small classroom.

Traditional Horseshoe

If you run an interactive classroom than you’ll want to make sure your desks are set up in a way that is conducive to discussion. One of the best ways to do this is by arranging student desks in a U-shaped formation. That way, everyone is able to see each other.

“Stadium” Style

If you’ve got a rowdy bunch this year that you’d like to keep your eye on, slanted or stadium-style rows are just the thing. Set up your desks in rows angled towards each other in a wide V-shape. This will allow you to be able to see what each student is doing at all times, and will also provide everyone with a direct line of sight to you, assisting with focus.

Grouped Seating

It’s not uncommon to find student desks grouped together in several small clusters throughout the classroom. This makes it easy for the teacher to assign group work, but it also provides the ability to cluster students based on skill level. If you really want to up the ante, consider swapping out your school desks for collaborative tables instead.
