5 Rainy Day Science Activities for Preschoolers

April 24, 2017

Keeping a preschooler busy on a rainy day can get exhausting, but it’s also a great way to spend quality time together. These 5 kid-approved science experiments will keep you and your toddler busy for hours:

1. Measure the Rain

Just because you’re stuck indoors, doesn’t mean your science has to be. Place an empty coffee can outside for the day. When the rain has stopped, bring it in and use a ruler to measure how much it rained.

2. Plant an Indoor Sponge Garden

Have your child sprinkle a damp sponge with grass seeds and a little water. After covering loosely with plastic wrap set it on a plate and place it on a windowsill to soak up some sun.  Be sure to keep the sponge slightly damp. In two weeks you’ll have an indoor lawn of your own.

3. Fun with Invisible Ink

After mixing lemon juice and water, dip a cotton swab into the mixture and begin writing your secret message or drawing onto a piece of white paper. Once completely dry, you can view your top secret message by holding the paper carefully to a light bulb.

4.Create an at Home Lava Lamp

Fill a water bottle two-thirds of the way with oil, and the rest with water. Then, add your little one’s favorite food coloring. Break up an antacid tab into quarters and drop in a piece to watch the lava erupt. After it settles, place in another piece and repeat as needed.

5. Play Around with Density

For this, you will just need two glasses of water, two eggs, and some salt. First, fill the glasses ¾ of the way with water. In the first glass add salt and drop an egg into each glass. Adding salt to the water increases its density, causing the egg to float.
