School is officially back in session and in addition to informing your students about all of the exciting things they will be learning this year, it’s also important to educate them on safety tips for the classroom. Safety in the classroom can’t be stressed enough. To ensure you have a great and safe school year, here are some classroom safety tips you should be sure to follow:
- Create organization in your classroom. Make sure the room is clean, orderly and clutter-free. Also be sure to check daily that everything you and your students need are easily accessible. Place everyday items low on shelves or in plain sight so that students do not have to go out of their way to get what they need. If supplies are too high and out of reach, students can easily get hurt in the process of trying to reach them.
- Strategically place mirrors next to your chalkboard or whiteboard so that you can supervise your students even when your back is turned. Even when your back is turned to the class, you can easily keep an eye on what’s happening behind you, minimizing the risk of something happening.
- Organize classroom furniture in a way that is safe and orderly. Don’t leave chairs in the middle of the room where students can easily trip on them! If you plan to set up classroom work stations, make sure they’re relatively easy for students to get to. That means keeping all possible walkways clear! Your movement around the classroom helps make your teaching more engaging and also with classroom control.
