The new school year is almost here and that means not only meeting new students, but meeting their families as well. Planning a back to school night doesn’t have to be boring. It sets the tone for the entire year with the parents of your new students, and opens the door for trust and communication. Here are some ways to make your back to school night a success to kick the school year off right:
Spruce Up Your Room: You can’t have a second chance to make a first impression. Make sure your classroom looks top notch and arrange furniture and accessories to appeal to your guests. Consider adding some new furniture pieces like a whiteboard or colorful chairs.
Sum Things Up: Creating a summary of what your student are expected to learn this year is helpful for parents to understand expectations and standards. Remind parents to read this with their children so they have an understanding of the year’s coursework.
Make Them Feel Welcome: Hand out a welcome flyer or welcoming and informational artwork to display throughout the room. Making this night interactive will keep parents engaged and excited about what’s to come.
Encourage Interaction: Creating nametags for all of the parents, will give them a sense of familiarity and a chance to open up a dialogue amongst them. Since these parents will all have children in your class throughout the entire year, playing ice breaker games is a great idea to make them feel comfortable with each other.
