When it comes to creating a functioning classroom atmosphere, organization is key. Remember that while keeping your lesson plans neat and your classroom tidy is important, it’s not the only way to retain organization! The classroom space itself must be set up in such a way that it fosters a positive and stimulating learning environment. If you’re looking to shake things up for the new year, here’s how you can begin rearranging.
Zone 1: Home Base – Here is where you can house your classroom mailboxes, cubbies and calendar. Set up your homework drop off and pick up bins and post any relevant class announcements or reminders in this space. That way, your student will know where to go to find important information all in one spot.
Zone 2: Exploration – Keep your students stimulated with an area dedicated to investigation and discovery. Stock it with plenty of craft supplies, electronics, games, books, magazines and more. A bookshelf or rack can be perfect for displaying sample student work to get imaginations flowing.
Zone 3: Classroom Materials – Avoid the unnecessary distractions of having a ton of extra school supplies at your students’ desks. Instead of storing their extra materials inside their desks, set up a well organized corner where they can find whatever they need on the spot – pencils, tape, glue, textbooks, paper, etc.
Zone 4: Silent Study Zone – For some students, reading or doing work in a quiet, secluded area is just what they need — so why not create that space for them? Section off a corner of the room with moveable partitions and add a round table and chairs. That way, it can also double as a collaborative for group work.
