3 Ways to Keep Students Stimulated Over the Holidays

December 14, 2015

When it comes to winter break, most students and teachers alike look forward to a hiatus from all things academic. However, it’s important to encourage your students to stay sharp over the holidays by reading regularly and exercising their problem solving and critical thinking skills. While some educators might resort to sending students off with holiday homework packets, we suggest trying to work together with your students and their parents to perpetuate fun, festive learning instead.

Here are three of the best ideas to suggest to parents to help keep kids stimulated over break:

1. Make time for a story. Encourage parents to read with their children, whether it be seasonal bedtime tales or other books the student is interested in. Send home a list of the most popular books for your grade level, and encourage parents to purchase them as holiday gifts.

2. Cook up your favorite recipe. Cooking requires math and measurements, making it the perfect way to let students practice their math skills. Send home some holiday cookie recipes that are chock full of fractions. Maybe you’ll even get to reap some of the benefits after break!

3. Say thank you to friends and family. As your students and their families receive holiday cards this season, suggest that parents have their children write thank you notes to send back. This presents a great way to hone writing skills over break, while also showing gratitude in a fun, adorable and well-appreciated way.
