For 10 months out of the year, children spend more time in the classroom or in a school setting than they do anywhere else (besides their home, of course). Since our school’s are a home to children more often than not,  it’s important to provide a safe, secure and comfortable environment where they feel protected. When a student feels safe at school it can help them to increase their focus and encourages a more positive learning experience.

Teachers, administrators and parents play a crucial role in students’ lives. With their help and a few protective measures, students are more likely to feel safer in school and therefore, increase productivity throughout the day. For your convenience, we’ve collected some tips that school administrators can use to reinforce safety in their schools:

  1. Inform parents about your school’s safety policies, drills and crisis prevention efforts, and keep them on board with any changes.
  2. Be visible; greet students in the morning, visit classrooms throughout the day, and make yourself accessible in case of an emergency.
  3. Establish an identification system for administrators, staff, students and visitors in order to keep tabs on who is in the building at all times.
  4. Conduct a yearly review of all school safety policies to make sure current safety issues are covered in your crisis plans.
  5. Connect with community institutions such as hospitals and law enforcement to discuss emergency response plans and share information about students who may be at risk.

For a complete list of tips and other precautionary measures schools can take, visit NASP Resources or the National Crime Prevention Council.

It’s important to remember that although safety is crucial during school, it is also essential before and after school. Teachers, parents and administrators alike should inform students on how they can stay safe traveling to and from school and what they should do in the event of an emergency.

At Nickerson Corporation, we feel keeping students safe in school should be a number one priority. That’s why we work with leading manufacturers to provide schools with equipment that can reinforce safety measures and protect students before, during and after the school day. Additionally, we are available to provide schools with top of the line locks that students can use to keep their things safe in addition to staying safe themselves.
