How to Start an Environmental Club at Your School

January 30, 2017

As more and more younger people are becoming environmentally conscious, many schools already have clubs dedicated to environmental protection and awareness – but some still do not. Starting an environmental club is a great way to spend time with friends after school, boost your resume and help raise awareness about important environmental issues. If you’re interested in starting a new club, here is a step-by-step guide for doing so.

Step 1: Gather a group of like minded students who are also interested in starting an environmental club. Depending on your school’s size, your administration may require anywhere from 6-20 interested students to form a new club.

Step 2: Find a teacher, faculty member or parent interested in becoming the organization’s advisor. They should be able to attend every meeting and provide students with advice and guidance.

Step 3: Decide on a vision and mission statement for the group. Gather the members and brainstorm answers to the questions, “Why did we form this club,” “What do we want to accomplish,” and “Why are we passionate about protecting the environment.” Once you’ve compiled a list of short answers, create a mission statement for the group.

Step 4: Advertise, advertise, advertise! Post flyers, announce it on the PA system, and tell your friends that a new club has just been created. Even if you have enough students to meet the club required minimum, you still want to have as many people involved as possible.

Step 5: Develop short and long term goals for the group. Come up with ideas for things to do at weekly meetings, as well as year-long projects that benefit the school or community. Whatever project(s) the group decides on, members should create a timeline that clearly lists important dates and everyone’s responsibilities.

Step 6: Decide on one event the club can host or sponsor for extra visibility and funding. You can organize a school wide street or beach clean-up, a tree planting day, an eco-friendly fashion show, or a field trip to a local zoo or nature reserve.
