How to Keep Your Student Desks Stain-Free

November 25, 2015

As the years pass you may notice that your classroom desks can pick up many stains and graffiti doodles as the never-ending flow of students come and go. Luckily, there are a few great tips for keeping them clean and removing those unsightly marks.

Student drawing a heart on her desk

Pencil & Magic Marker Doodles – These are among the easiest stains to remove and can usually be wiped away with a simple solution of soap and water or a spritz of all-purpose cleaner. Silver polish can also help get rid of those remaining pencil marks.

Stray Pen Spots – A standard citrus-based cleaner will help wash away the remnants of pen splotches. Just spray and blot with water to lift the stain.

Crayon Creations – With a little bit of water and baking soda those waxy colorful creations will give way to a spotless surface once again.

Water Stains – Toothpaste is not just good for cleaning teeth, it helps keep desks sparkling and water stain free! Just rub a big into the stain with a rag or paper towel and wipe the residue away with a bit of water.

Permanent Marker Drawings – Hairspray is a great tool to help remove stubborn permanent marker spots from classroom furniture and white boards alike. Once you’ve lifted the stain, spray on some rubbing alcohol to wipe the sticky residue away.

If you’ve tried everything but still can’t get your student desks sparkling, it might be time to consider investing in a brand new set. Afterall, the foundation of any successful learning environment starts with it’s physical setting!
