Perfect Your Classroom Management Skills With These Simple Tips

July 8, 2015

Summertime is great for teachers because it allows them to finally have a little down time to reflect on the past year and identify areas where improvement can be made. In our opinion, one of the most difficult items to conquer as an educator is getting a good handle on classroom management. Kids will be kids, which means they are often rowdy and rambunctious – Not to mention there are between 15-30 of them in a classroom at any given time! School children in classroom at lesson As you look back on your school-year and prepare for September, here are a few classroom management tips and tricks that might make keeping things under control easier come the fall:

Give everyone a number. This might seem like a simple solution, but it’s one that will help you tremendously for multiple different classroom tasks. One of the best benefits of a numbering system is that assignments are more easily organized. Have each student write their assigned number at the top right corner of every paper they hand in, that way you can easily collect, grade, organize and distribute them later on. It will also be significantly easier to tell when things are missing at a glance.

Establish a few simple rules. Meghan Everette, a teacher and blogger for Scholastic.com, suggests keeping it short and sweet with 5 distinct rules that cover a variety of infractions. Keeping the rule list to a minimum helps ensure that students will remember the do’s and don’ts of the classroom. Here are the 5 rules that Everette suggests you employ:

    1. Follow directions quickly.
    2. Raise your hand to speak.
    3. Listen when your teacher is talking.
    4. Make smart choices.
    5. Respect others, respect yourself, and respect your school.

Let music do the talking. Music can be used to help seamlessly transition from one activity to the next, calmly and efficiently. Whether it’s line-up time, pack-up time or move to the rug for story-time, having a distinct musical cue for each activity will encourage your students follow the rules while having fun at the same time.
