Super Bowl Classroom Activities

January 27, 2015

American football isolated over a white backgroundAs a result of many schools across Long Island and the rest of the tri state area closing today due to the blizzard that has touched down, many teachers have been left with unexpected time on their hands. Although the day might be spent shoveling or spending some time outdoors enjoying all that nature has to offer, snow days are also a great opportunity for teachers to get ahead and prepare their lesson plans for the days to come.

If you’re a teacher looking to utilize the day to prepare for the remainder of the week, why not take a moment to put together a few Super Bowl activities for your students? With the big game just a few days away, there is no better time than now to incorporate what may be your students’ favorite sport into your upcoming lessons. See below for a few Super Bowl activity ideas, courtesy of Education World:

  1. Provide each student with a map of the United States and see if they can first label the states where NFL teams are located. Depending on their knowledge of the sport, you can then move on and see who can name and/or find the specific cities! Once the map is complete, take it a step further and spend some time talking about the cities where this year’s teams are from, then touch on the city/state where the game will be played.
  2. If your students were on one of this year’s Super Bowl teams, what would they want their game tickets and jerseys to look like? Find out by asking them to design their own.
  3. While most people watch the Super Bowl because they’re truly interested in the game, others place more of their focus on the commercials! For this activity, place students into groups and have them develop a Super Bowl commercial of their own by answering questions such as who are the main characters? What is the setting? If you have some extra time left over, you might even ask them to act parts of it out!
