While it is not one of the core subjects such as math, language arts, science or social studies, physical education is an essential part of the education curriculum for children in kindergarten through twelfth grade. In fact, many colleges even require students to complete a certain amount of gym credits in order to be eligible for graduation. According to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), quality physical education programs are needed in order to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment of physical activity for students so that they can continue to be physically active throughout their life.

With help from NASPE, we’ve compiled a list of additional benefits that reinforce why good physical education practices in schools are necessary:

Improved Physical Fitness: Physical education improves student’s muscular strength, flexibility, endurance, and body composition. Developing these assets are great for more than just participating in physical activities, they also contribute to living an overall healthy life.

Skill Development: By participating in well-implemented physical education programs, students will develop motor skills that are necessary for success in future physical activities.

Improved Judgment: Good physical education programs can influence a child’s moral development. In these classes, children are able to assume leadership positions, learn to cooperate with others, and accept responsibility for their behavior.

Strengthened Peer Relationships: Physical education is great for aiding children in socializing with others by providing the opportunity for students to learn positive people skills. Additionally, in late childhood and adolescence, participating in dances, games and sports is important in peer culture and can strengthen relationships with students, teachers, administrators, and more.

Improved Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem: As children master skills and concepts in physical activity, they are likely to experience a stronger sense of self-worth. In the future, this leads to children becoming more confident, independent, assertive and self controlled.
